5 Stars Zhu Zhu Review
Picked up two of these guys the other day (this was my second) since they happened to be in the store and I happened to be in the store. A little bit of background first: I’m a 26 year-old collector of many things including robotic pets. I’ve tried out Furbys, Micropets, Neopets, Scoozie pets, Petal-chi, Mutsu, Fureal Friends, and more so I consider myself a bit of an expert on the subject.

To start with, these things eat batteries, have triple A’s on hand. Second, I don’t have any playsets, I’m just testing the hamsters.

Upon opening and removing this little guy I tried out “cuddle mode”, which was a little disappointing. The hamster will lie still and make cute noises every few seconds or so but he isn’t really responding to anything. “Try me mode” is when the hamster is off but you can push his nose to hear a random noise, not a lot of fun there. Now play mode, that’s where the fun is. The wheels are fast and the grip is really strong, I promptly put it on my boyfriend to see if it would climb up his shirt and it did, hit the back of the couch, made a springy noise and ran back down. Even he cracked up at it. It tackles carpet and all hard surfaces no problem, and makes a ton of different noises, some 40 in all, and each of the four designs sounds unique!. You have to be careful around stairs but all in all it does what it was made to do and cheaply at that. At normal retail they’re cheaper than most action figures.

(I got mine at normal retail and I suggest you wait until you can too. If you have kids and can’t find them try giving a cute IOU written from the hamster saying how it will come to live with your child after X-mas. They have a guarantee from you, you have a kid who still has something to look forward to after December. All is well.)

Remember these are for ages 3 and up and have motorized parts. It says in the instruction to supervise your child, so do so. Risk is probably minimal but if you have a kid you wouldn’t give a RC car to then they’re probably too little for these.

So to wrap up

Good: Funny and varied sounds, cheap, cute, runs fast and randomly, fascinates my dog!

Bad: Hard to find (for now), eats batteries (2 AAA), can pinch, can be broken with a moderate impact.

2 Stars Vendors should be ashamed!
The vendors that are selling these toys for outrageous prices should be ashamed! This is a kids toy and parents are not able to find them because people are buying them up to resell at a profit. I was able to get all of the hamsters and accessories that I needed at retail prices by staying ahead of the scalpers at WalMart. The store associates say that they will stock shelves with 24 Funhouses at midnight and that one person will come in and buy every one of them before 7 am. This is just wrong. Do not support vendors who raise the prices in this difficult economy. I hate to think that these people with no scruples will have a prosperous Christmas while depriving kids whose parents can not find them or are smart enough not to pay an a ridiculous price for an [...] toy.

These pets are really cute and fun to play with. My son is 6 and he really likes to play with these.

5 Stars Making a young child very happy
I had bought this product for a 6 year old little girl. This is something that she had wanted for a long time but was not able to find it anywhere in the stores. I had went online looking for the product and had finally found it. I had the item delivered to her house as a surprise. When the item arrived and she had opened the box she was very excited. This was the one that she really, really wanted. I was glad that I had made a young child very happy.

1 Star Toy Injured Child
This toy is known to have injured a child already. The wheels spin fast and change direction randomly. When picked up and held they can severely pinch skin and not release. Hair is very easily caught in the wheels and difficult to remove. I am surprised there have not been many more complaints of injury. I would not recommend this toy at all.

My son wanted a hamster, but we couldn’t have one with our cats. He’s really enjoyed this, and it is about the right amount of responsibility for him! Cute little guys just keep moving & chattering. We haven’t experienced any problems.

1 Star Dangerous Toy and a Rip Off
This accessory toy is part of a pet hamster line which caused injury to a child. The hamster pet toy can severely pinch skin and get entangled in hair during normal play. The wheels spin fast and change direction rapidly. If picked up and the wheels engage skin is caught in the wheels and they do not release. Just leaning in to play with the hamster is enough to be in danger of hair getting caught in the wheels and not just being pulled, but the hamster climbed up to the scalp of a child’s head before the toy could be stopped and almost cut the scalp. The toy should be recalled. Therefore, the accessories are of no use. Also, the price is ridiculously expensive.

1 Star This Toy Needs To Be Recalled. Don’t Bother Buying It.
I bought this hamster toy and all its accessories for my 4 year old grand daughter. She was very excited about the toy and I thought it was a very clever toy. However, within minutes of playing with it she was pinched severely by the hamster’s wheels when she picked it up and put it on her hand (just like the child in the advertisement is doing). I put the toy on my hand to see how it happened. I was shocked at how hard it pinched and would not release the skin. I had to pull the toy off me hard. The wheels spin fast and change direction randomly. It’s fine on the floor if you don’t pick it up. However, that’s not how this toy is advertised. It is supposed to be a “pet”. What child isn’t going to pick up their pet hamster during play? It gets even worse. The following day, the hamster’s wheels caught the child’s hair and started climbing up fast to her scalp. Again, not releasing. She was screaming in pain and fear. The only thing that prevented her scalp from being cut and needing emergency treatment was that I was closely supervising her and able to get my fingers between her scalp and the wheels. She lost a clump of hair and was traumatized by it.

I’ve spent the last week trying to return the hamster and all its accessories that I bought through Amazon. The manufacturer was contacted, but although expressed concern does not want to take the hamster back directly and feels the warning in the instructions is sufficient. BUYER BEWARE. This is a danger and should be pulled from the market.

I got up early and was able to get Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters at WalMart. So glad because I know they are selling out stores because I’ve been calling everywhere.

Anyway, my kids have been playing with them all day. And then hair got wrapped around the little wheel and I thought one had broke so I spent forever trying to get the hair off — but that’s not what was making an additional squealing noise and making the wheels stop turning.

The little Zhu Zhu pets hamsters just needed new batteries. They came with 2 AAA batteries from the manufacturer — and I’m sure they weren’t in the store that long so that little hands could’ve worn out the batteries thru the “try me” window.

They must’ve just come with batteries not as good as the ones I changed them into. Because I just popped in some Duracel or whatever batteries — and now the Zhu Zhu Pets run even faster than when we first bought them this morning.

My children are playing with them as I write.

Now we want all the Zhu Zhu pets in the collection — and the accessories. Maybe by Christmas or before…

If you can’t find one of these for your kids….wait. Don’t be stupid & pay $50 or even $100 that some of these jerks are trying to get for them. They just aren’t worth it!! My son got one & likes it fine, but months ago he got another hamster like this one at Cracker Barrell that had a wheel & was every bit as cute for $15!!!! They just aren’t that special & they will be trying to give them away in stores after Christmas & the kids that got them will have lost all interest by then anyways!!!!!!

Bought this for 8 year old neice who loves to play with her pets. Loves to let it wander around on its own and carry it in her blankets and carry pouch. Sure beats buying a real hamster!

5 Stars “So Cute, just like real”
We now have 3 Zhu Zhu pets and they are adorable, just like having the real thing without the cleanup!!! Looking forward to purchasing the other items to make them a home of their own. My daughter is 8 and just loves them. I like picking them up and holding them, they are so soft.

1 Star Go go pets don’t GO
We bought two of these toys through Amazon. Both came from different sellers. One worked for about 20 minutes. The other one never moved at all. They make noises, but GO Nowhere. Now I have the headache of trying to get the MFG to return the toys as neither seller will accept returns that have been opened!!!

Although the prices are out of this world sometimes, you can always count on Amazon to have that HAVE TO HAVE IT NOW TOY!!! If you don’t have to have it now feel free to shop store to store to store to store until you can find it. If you can afford it, Amazon will have it!!! This little hamster has brought us loads of fun!! The accessories make it even better. Have extra AA Batteries on hand because this only comes with demo batteries, so you might even have to change the batteries before you play with it for the first time. Our favorite accessory so far is the adventure ball. You can bet this is going to the be the #1 Hot Toy for 2009!

1 Star Not worth the hype
My daughter wanted these after seeing them advertised on TV numerous times. If you buy the toys for regular price at Wal-Mart or ToysRUs then it’s not so bad because they are very cheaply made. The funhouse comes unsnapped frequently–very cheap plastic parts. The hamster ball is also cheap and comes unsnapped, and the hamsters flip on their backs frequently and you have to open the ball and put them back on their feet.

The hamsters themselves are cute BUT they flip over alot when used with the component pieces and you have to put them right side up to work. They are also a bit noisey–you can hear the wheels. My daughter lost interest in them very quickly. Paying more than the base price for them is paying way too much—especially the component pieces. She has the funhouse, the blanket, the carrier, the ball, the surfboard, and the car, plus all 4 hamsters. We bought everything at once.

In summary, don’t pay these outrageous prices for a cheaply made toy!

4 Stars Real Toy review!!!
This is the base toy for all of the Zhu Zhu or Go Go pets sets… It is the hamsters house.. They know what room they are in and act accordingly.. Brush teeth in the bathroom and sleep in bed.. This set has kept my children entertained for hours!!! It has gotten me out of having to buy a real Hamster and when they don’t feel like playing with it – they don’t have to or feel neglectful. No smell and no buying food.. I can not wait for the babies and outfits to come out. They be expensive right now because of the high demand. but still well worth it. Enjoy!!!

1 Star FRAUD and Price Gauging
Item promised by 9/3 and didn’t ship. Same product listed as instock, but prices raised from $79 to $300 from several vendors. Checked on line again today the price is listed as $100+ Price gauging! I’m shocked and dissapointed that Amazon would allow their integrity and reputation to be destroyed by dealing with these companies. I will not order through Amazon vendors again. 5 Stars A rodent on wheels
This was purchased for my daughter. I was afraid it would be one of those toys purchased then set aside. It’s funny and makes cute noises, is responsive to being petted, and rolls all over the house.

Still, it is now a dust collector after a month. If only we could convince the child to contribute to her own college fund…. sigh….. anyone want to buy a slightly used rolling hamster???

5 Stars A cute little toy
My daughter has been saving her allowance for the last few weeks hoping to find these and today we stumbled across them at TRU for retail price. For the $10 price tag she’s been very entertained this afternoon. The creature makes a variety of chirping, beeping, and random noises as it whirls around. It works much better on a tile, vinyl, or hardwood surface than on carpet. You can either have it in a cuddle type mode where you press its head and it chitters at you or press the back and it’ll run around randomly. It’s a sweet toy although noisier than I expected. The store clerk said that production is supposed to meet demand in a few weeks as Christmas draws closer. For $10 we’re happy, but I’m not sure it’s worth 2 or 3 times as much as it is a rather simple toy.

5 Stars We love our hamster Leroy!
First of all, we bought our hamster at The Cracker Barrel [...].(No it wasn’t on clearance.) Secondly, we love him! I saw him and thought he looked fun and thought the kids would get a kick out of him. My 3 year old was terrified of him at first but she loves him now and I’m pretty sure she thinks he’s real. My son who is 7 has fun with him too! He makes his way around the whole house and it’s just like he’s our pet hamster minus the mess and smell! Just a warning though, make sure your toddler knows not to put the hamster on their head. haha!!! My daughters hair got wrapped around the wheels and he was stuck on her head. It was hysterical but she lost a chunk of hair… But all is good. It was [...] well spent.

Our school fundraising event had this item as a gift for selling 50 items. My kids are lucky to sell 5. My daughter was devastated as she really wanted this toy. So for Christmas I bought it for her and she loves it! It really is fun running around the house and our dogs sure are entertained by it. It was well worth the $7.95 plus shipping we spent. I have a very happy 8 year old who didn’t have to sell $1000 worth of junk to get it!

I saw this in the Memphis airport for 12 dollars in the store. I did not have time to stop and buy but they had it for 12 dollars plus tax. This vendor is a rip off wanting over 50 dollars for it. And we all thought airport stuff was overpriced.

This is a great toy for my son as he is allergic to cats and dogs and other pets that he wants. He loves this and follows it around the house.

1 Star Don’t Waste Your Money
These accessories are for a hamster “pet” toy that is dangerous and should be taken off the market. There is no need for these accessories as the hamster should not be picked up by a child. When petting the hamster, the wheels can easily engage and start spinning rapidly and change direction randomly. This can and has caused severe pinching. The wheels don’t release, either when caught on even a 1/2″ thickness of skin. You have to rip the toy off you if you get caught in it. My grand child was almost scalped playing with the hamster when it caught her hair in the wheels, did not release and started climbing to her scalp. If she were not under close supervision at the time, she would have ended up in the emergency room with stitches. This hamster doesn’t need a bed and blanket. It needs a glue trap.

I got this at Wal-Mart for only five dollars, why are you guys ripping us off here, just because we are now on the hunt for Christmas stuff? We work hard for our money, and certainly won’t waste it on this item that’s 800% more expensive than regular dept. stores, not to mention your shipping is out of anyones price range!
